Ash Sutton claimed his second Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship victory of the day, with another impressive display on the Donington Park National circuit this afternoon (Sunday).
Sutton once again made a strong start in his NAPA Racing UK machine, leading from the line to hold his advantage as the pack arrived at Redgate for the first time. Tom Ingram’s Team Vertu Hyundai immediately slotted in behind the leading Ford with reigning champion taking third following a strong launch off the line from fourth.
Whilst the leading duo circulated nose to tail, Hill was able to reign them in slightly and by lap three he was in a position to launch an attack on Ingram. He wasn’t able to make anything stick through the Craner Curves however, and this allowed Josh Cook to opportunistically slot past him at the Old Hairpin.
Sutton was then forced to defend hard as the race entered its mid stages, with Ingram on his bumper lap after lap. This allowed the lead group to bunch up with as many as seven cars in the main gaggle at the front of the field.
Dan Cammish, who’d started eighth after a charge from the rear in race one, made the most of the tightly bunched group to continue his forward progress. By lap nine he was into the top-five after a sweeping move on NAPA Racing UK teammate Dan Rowbottom.
As the race entered its second half, Sutton and Ingram began to pull away from the others. And the chasing group was reduced following a tyre issue for Cook who ran off the track, promoting Hill into third. Last year’s title winner was unable to hold the position however, with Cammish surging past on the run out of McLeans on the penultimate lap.
Up ahead of them, Sutton resisted Ingram’s attack right to the flag as they finished first and second ahead of Cammish. Hill settled for fourth ahead of Rowbottom who secured another strong points haul in fifth.
Behind that, Tom Chilton drove home to sixth one place ahead of Aiden Moffat in his first weekend at the wheel of BMW machinery. Chris Smiley, Dexter Patterson and Adam Morgan rounded out the top-10.
